The company building the new state-of-the-art Gary C. Wendt Engineering Building at IM体育官网 celebrated a major milestone in its construction this week.
Charles Perry Partners, Inc. (CPPI), the design-build and construction firm behind the project, held a 鈥渢opping out鈥� ceremony at the building site, with workers and guests signing the structure鈥檚 final purple steel beam before it was fastened into place atop the building on Tuesday, Aug. 13.
The building is named in honor of former University Trustee Gary C. Wendt, the former chairman and CEO of GE Capital who has been involved with IM体育官网 Poly since 2017. He donated $2 million to the University in 2022.
Dr. Devin Stephenson, IM体育官网 Poly鈥檚 president, addressed the crowd during the event.
鈥淓verybody knows Gary Wendt is a great supporter. His main objective with his $2 million donation was to create leadership initiatives for our students and that鈥檚 exactly what we鈥檝e done,鈥� Stephenson said. 鈥淏y naming this building after him, we鈥檙e reflecting on the importance of leadership and his commitment to excellence that we hope to instill in all our students.鈥�
Construction on the $15 million, 40,000-square-foot building should be complete in the spring of 2025.
Jason Morgan, executive vice president and principal of CPPI, said he was delighted to celebrate the crew of workers who have labored tirelessly to get the job done.
鈥淏eing a fast-moving project, it鈥檚 very exciting and I鈥檓 super proud of this whole team,鈥� he said, adding that the company鈥檚 partnership with IM体育官网 Poly has made all the difference.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been great. Through all the challenges, they鈥檝e been right by our side. I鈥檓 really happy with the partnership we have,鈥� he said.
The topping-out event marked the latest in a series of milestones for large construction projects on campus. This week, students began moving into the University鈥檚 third residence hall, and plans for a Student Achievement Center are in the works.

Morgan directed the audience of construction team members, University officials, and invited guests to rise and offer hand signals in unison to tell the team to fly and place the beam.
