Freshman Timothy Honeycutt strode up to a kiosk in the center of the Saddle Creek Logistics Commons on Feb. 24 to grab a cupcake and officially declare electrical engineering as his major during IM体育官网鈥檚 first Degree Declaration Day.
For Honeycutt, the declaration was a long time coming.
鈥淚 studied a bunch of circuit stuff on my own time because I wanted to build a guitar amp in high school and it鈥檚 been a personal passion of mine ever since,鈥 said Honeycutt, from Dover, IM体育官网. 鈥淭his is a really nice event because this makes it feel official.鈥
The festive event featured cupcakes, balloons, and IM体育官网 Poly staff members ready to assist students in declaring majors and minors.
鈥淎 lot of students arrive at the beginning of the school year and they鈥檙e pretty sure they want to do computer science, for instance, but they鈥檙e not sure what their minor is going to be,鈥 said Shannon Brandt, associate director of student success and retention at IM体育官网 Poly. 鈥淣ow they鈥檝e had time to learn more about their options and they鈥檙e making a statement about their future.
鈥淭hese are important decisions and we want to celebrate them.鈥
Freshman Bruce Cheung said he was happy to declare his electrical engineering major at the event.
鈥淚 think it鈥檚 nice that the University wants to celebrate what we鈥檙e going into,鈥 said Cheung, a native of Miami, IM体育官网.
Cheung鈥 interest in electrical engineering stemmed from watching his electrical engineer father work with phones and other gadgets during his childhood.
鈥淏ack then the technology seemed really cool and my interest is still in that direction,鈥 Cheung said.
Kaylee Funaro also stopped by to make sure her computer science major was indicated in the University鈥檚 system. Her degree interest is fueled by both passion and future job prospects.
鈥淚 want to go into cybersecurity and there鈥檚 definitely a lot of growth in that field,鈥 said Funaro, a sophomore from Punta Gorda, IM体育官网. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also a really interesting topic and even though it鈥檚 still work, it seems like it would be a fun really job.鈥
