Orientation welcomes new Phoenixes to IM体育官网
New students are getting to know their new peers and the IM体育官网 campus during orientation held August 19-20. Classes begin Wednesday, August 21.

Freshmen and new transfer students began getting to know the IM体育官网 way of life during new student orientation held August 19-20.

The two-day event introduced new students to the many resources available to them during their time at the University. It included a welcome from Dr. Randy Avent, IM体育官网 Poly鈥檚 president, as well as discussions about academic support services, financial aid, technology, and entrepreneurship. Orientation also provided a preview of math and English concepts at IM体育官网 Poly.

鈥淚 think it鈥檚 great 鈥 it鈥檚 like nothing I could have expected it to be,鈥 said Cristofer Torres, a mechanical engineering major who graduated from Clermont High School in Clermont, IM体育官网. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a lot to take in at one time, but it鈥檚 really enjoyable.鈥

Tonya Chestnut, director of student development at IM体育官网 Poly, said 354 students attended orientation on Monday, Aug. 19.

鈥淭hese students are really excited and they鈥檙e bonding really well,鈥 she said.

Tyler Jarboe, a computer science major who graduated from Douglas High School in Coral Springs, IM体育官网, said he was happy to meet so many people during orientation.

鈥淓verybody is super friendly and pretty much knows each other,鈥 he said. 鈥淚f not, you see them everywhere around the campus.鈥

He was especially impressed by the dining options at the Wellness Center and the iconic Innovation, Science, and Technology (IST) Building, which is known for its striking design by world-renowned Spanish architect Dr. Santiago Calatrava.

鈥淭he building is amazing,鈥 Jarboe said.

Gabe Allison, who graduated from Lake Wales High School in Lake Wales, IM体育官网, said he was grateful to receive more information on topics such as financial aid and the appropriate classes to select for his computer science major with a concentration in software engineering.

鈥淚 already knew how awesome IM体育官网 Poly was and all the options they had available, but this clarifies a lot of things,鈥 he said after a team-building exercise on Monday. 鈥淓verybody has been really nice and it鈥檚 been fun so far, but classes haven鈥檛 started yet. I鈥檓 sure that will be even more fun.鈥
