IM体育官网 student and movie buff shares best horror films for Halloween fright
Movie buff Robert White is looking forward to spending Halloween night getting into the spirit of the holiday and watching horror movies.

This Halloween, IM体育官网 Poly senior Robert White will be spending his night watching horror movies and hoping they scare the wits out of him. As something of a connoisseur of scary movies and movies in general, the films have a high bar to clear.

鈥淎ri Aster directed 鈥楬ereditary,鈥 which is supposed to be one of the best horror movies to come out in like 20 years and I haven鈥檛 seen it yet,鈥 said White, a computer science major with a concentration in software engineering. 鈥淢y expectations are high, and I鈥檒l probably be disappointed because it鈥檚 too much to say 鈥榖est movie of the decade鈥 or 鈥榖est horror movie.鈥欌

He鈥檒l be rounding out his night with 鈥淭he Witch,鈥 a 2015 supernatural horror film.

鈥淢ovies have the ability to manipulate people, whether it鈥檚 making people sad because it鈥檚 a sad movie or happy because it鈥檚 a happy movie 鈥 horror is really fun because it鈥檚 really easy to scare people,鈥 White said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 fun watching bad horror movies and also fun watching master-class movies that don鈥檛 use any of the tropes.鈥

His love of all things film started early when he fell in love with the action-packed pirate movie 鈥淪washbuckler鈥 when he was around 4 years old.

鈥淭his guy was the hero; he was the coolest guy,鈥 White said. 鈥淧irates were by no means good people, but the lives they lived were fun, so if you get the audience to believe for some reason that your main character is a good guy, you can have lots of fun watching someone like Jack Sparrow run around, and that鈥檚 what this movie was.鈥

In the following years, he鈥檇 learn about the science of filmmaking and often visit the theater to watch movies by himself. These days, White spends time between studying for classes engaging with the Media Club and Music Club, watching new and classic movies, and devouring the film catalogs of directors such as Denis Villeneuve, Sam Raimi, and David Fincher.

Here are White鈥檚 top movie picks in his own words for others looking for a great scary movie to watch this Halloween.

  1. 鈥淓vil Dead鈥 鈥 This is a movie I love beyond being a horror movie. It鈥檚 just so much fun. The first one is a genuine horror movie while the second one is like a half and half goofball-horror movie and the third one is the funniest thing in the world.
  2. 鈥淗alloween鈥 (1978 and 2018 releases) 鈥 If you haven鈥檛 seen the 鈥淗alloween鈥 movies, watch the first one and the most recent. The first 鈥淗alloween鈥 was the first slasher movie of all time. It鈥檚 so original and you know what鈥檚 going to happen but it鈥檚 still fun to watch it happen. And coming back 40 years later and seeing the 2018 sequel, which now has to stand up to all the different slashers that came during that time and being able to stand on its own is really impressive.
  3. 鈥淭he Thing鈥 鈥 There鈥檚 lots of gore and violence, but it鈥檚 a master class of horror. It鈥檚 an actual thriller that does not rely on a lot of cheap scares that will scare the tar out of you in a fair way where you don鈥檛 feel cheated by the movie. 鈥淭he Thing鈥 is terrifying because it follows a dozen scientists who make consistently good decisions and still end up dead.
